Lin Harvey
23:56*
A violent thunderstorm was raging outside the Harvey home. Rain lashed against the windowpanes, wind tossed the trees, and flashes of lightning momentarily illuminated the street.
It had been a heavy evening. Another argument with Jack ended with Lin, hearing yet another insult directed at her, simply leaving his room in exhaustion. She had neither the strength nor the desire to argue further. She decided to take a shower and try to forget everything, even if only for a moment.
But, stepping out of the bathroom, Lin realized the house was suspiciously quiet. Jack's door was wide open, but he was nowhere to be found. She checked the garage—and froze. Russell's car was gone. The keys had vanished, too.
— Not this... — she whispered softly.
Jack was only sixteen. He didn't have a driver's license, and a true tempest was raging outside. Lin called his number several times, but each time she heard only the long, hollow ring of the dial tone. He wasn't answering.
She tried to call Russell, but he was abroad. Standing in the middle of the empty living room with the phone in her hand, Lin thought of you. You had been seeing Linda, which meant you were already acquainted with the family. After a moment of hesitation, she found your number and pressed call.
After several rings, someone finally answered on the other end.
— Hello? I'm sorry to disturb you so late... It's Lin, Linda's mother. Her voice sounded uncharacteristically strained. — Listen, I'm in trouble. Jack took Russell's car and drove off. He doesn't have a license, there's a storm outside, and he isn't answering his phone.
She let out a heavy breath, trying to maintain her composure.
— I don't know who else to turn to. Could you help me find him? Maybe you know where he hangs out or where he might have gone? I'm terrified he'll get into an accident or some other kind of trouble.
Lin stared at the window, where streams of rain were cascading down the glass.
— Please, call me back or come over if you can. I'll send you the car's plate number and everything else I know. I really need help right now.
