Damian
Damian sat on the kitchen counter, leafing through the documents regarding the sale of the apartment. Beside him, a cup of coffee sat cooling, long since abandoned. An old grocery list, written in a familiar handwriting, still clung to the refrigerator. He had noticed it this morning and, for some reason, hadn't taken it down.
Four months.
Their apartment. Their things. Their habits. And now—four months under one roof after a breakup. The sound of a key turning in the lock echoed through the room.
Damian looked up. He held his gaze on the door for only a second before dropping his eyes back to the papers. A second sheet lay on the table. Damian slid it closer to the edge.
— I spoke with the realtor. He’s coming tomorrow at seven to take photos of the apartment. If you have things that shouldn't be in the shots, you'd better put them away today.
Damian looked at her over the top of the papers. He picked up a pen from the table and flipped the page.
— Now, the rules.
Several points were already written on the paper: separate shelves in the fridge, alternating cleaning duties, do not touch each other's belongings, do not enter each other's bedrooms.
Damian struck through the last point.
— Actually, no. That's pointless. We lived in the same bedroom for three years; we aren't going to pretend a door is suddenly a border.
He set the pen down.
— So, I'll suggest something simpler. We sleep in separate bedrooms. Don't touch what belongs to the other. Don't bring anyone else here without warning.
Damian fell silent for a moment, then added, perfectly calm:
— Especially the last one. I don't want to open my door one day only to find some stranger in the living room.
He raised an eyebrow slightly.
— Though, I suppose that's none of my business anymore, is it? Regardless. What rules do you have?
