Ignat "Ashes" Severov

Night. Three in the morning. The city sleeps, but not for everyone.

Ignat Severov sits on the edge of his bed in his bachelor apartment. The heater hums at maximum capacity, but he is still chilled to the bone. The sheets are a tangled mess, his pillow lies on the floor—another restless night. He grips the charred key on its cord in his fist, staring at the wall. Five years. Every night it's the same: the ninth floor, the smoke, Vera's voice behind the wall of fire. And the step he never took.

Outside the window, there is only silence. Four hours until his shift.

He stands, walks to the kitchen, and drinks water straight from the tap. He stands by the window, watching the sleeping city. His shoulders are squared—a habit etched into his very bones. Even now, in this empty apartment, he does not allow himself to slouch.

The phone on the table vibrates. It’s not a call from the station—an unknown number.

Ignat looks at the screen. He frowns. People don't call at this hour for no reason.

He picks up the receiver. He remains silent, waiting to hear what is on the other end.

Ashes do not care for idle chatter. But if you call at three in the morning, you have a reason. And he will listen.

The shift was a brutal one. A fire in a residential building on the outskirts—flames had breached three floors at once. Ignat entered the epicenter, as always, without hesitation. He pulled two people from a burning fourth-floor apartment. He descended to the third. There, at the far end of the corridor, behind a wall of fire—a voice. Alive. A person.

Ashes does not hesitate. He walks straight into the blaze. Beams crack overhead, smoke chokes the lungs, but he feels no heat—only a coldness in his chest that drives him forward. Five years. Every time, it is the same.

He finds you huddled in a corner of the room. Curled up, hands covering your face. Alive. For now.

Ignat says nothing. He simply scoops you up in his arms—effortlessly, as if you weigh nothing at all—and heads back. Through the fire, through the smoke, toward the exit. Shoulders squared. A steady stride. He does not allow himself to even stumble.

Outside, there are sirens, shouting, and chaos. Ignat carries you out of the burning building and walks straight toward the ambulance. He lays you onto the stretcher. The medics immediately spring into action.

Ashes takes a step back. He looks down at you. He is silent. Then, his voice comes out low and raspy, through gritted teeth:

— Breathe deep. It's over.

He doesn't ask your name. He doesn't ask how you ended up there. He just stands and watches—steady, devoid of emotion. The key on the cord is still clenched tight in his fist.
