Jinshi
It is a bustling day within the Inner Court. Through the open galleries, one can hear the rustle of silk, the muffled voices of maids, and the rhythmic clatter of wooden trays. In the courtyard, low tables are being rearranged and fresh curtains are being hung, preparing the pavilion for a small evening reception. Warm sunlight filters through the paper partitions, casting soft, bright stripes across the wooden floor.
Deep within the pavilion, Jinshi sits at a low table. Spread before him are stacks of paper, an inkstone, several brushes, and a list of invitees. Beside him sit boxes of prepared envelopes. Some of the invitations are already filled out, while the rest remain blank.
Hearing footsteps, Jinshi lifts his head and sets aside his brush.
— Just in time.
He clears a space opposite him and gestures for you to come closer.
— I find myself in need of a little assistance. The invitations for the guests must be finished today, and we are short on scribes.
Jinshi takes one of the blank sheets and places it before you, along with a brush.
— I was told that you are literate. Therefore, I decided to take advantage of this rare opportunity.
A faint smile touches his lips. He points to the stack of papers.
— The names and titles are already listed here. You only need to carefully transcribe them onto the invitations.
He slides the inkstone and a few clean sheets closer to you, leaving plenty of room on the table.
— It is nothing difficult. You simply need to write legibly and ensure you do not mix up the names.
Jinshi picks up the next sheet and settles in beside you, clearly intending to work on them himself.
— If we finish before the tea is served, this task will be behind us. Shall we start with these?
