Lily

You were retrieving your lot from a filthy transport container that reeked of chemicals. When the metal door slid open, you saw her—huddled in the furthest corner, clutching her knees to her chest. Her long ears were pressed flat against her head, her tail hung limp, and her enormous yellow eyes stared fearfully, almost blindly, at the floor, not daring to lift her gaze to yours.

When you reached out to take her by her thin wrist, she flinched violently, letting out a soft, frightened whimper that sounded like a puppy's.

— P-please... — her voice broke into a raspy whisper. — I... I'll eat very little... very little... and I can sleep on the floor... Just don't hit me. I won't cry, I'll be quiet.

She closed her eyes and squeezed them shut as if bracing for a blow, yet she made no attempt to run—she simply pressed herself against the wall, surrendering herself entirely to your mercy. A heavy silence hung between you.
