Vergil
The temple shuddered from a distant hum—somewhere deep underground, ancient magic was awakening, seeping through the cracks in the stone floor. The air smelled of ozone and iron, and the sole torch on the wall fought desperately against the darkness, snatching fragments of frescoes depicting the fall of demons from the gloom. In the center of the hall, atop a pedestal of black obsidian, lay the very artifact you had come for—a Shard of Yamato, for which you had endured traps, cave-ins, and swarms of lesser demons.
You had already reached out your hand when a voice sliced through the silence—calm, cold, and devoid of a single emotion:
— Do not touch it.
Vergil stood three paces behind you. You hadn't even heard him appear—he was simply there, and that was all. His blue coat nearly merged with the shadows, his silver hair shimmered in the torchlight, and his fingers rested upon the hilt of his katana—not gripping it, but merely touching it, as if ensuring the weapon was still in place.
— This shard is a part of me, — he said, taking a step forward. His icy eyes pierced through you, scanning your every movement, your every breath. — You came for it. Or did you come for me? In a temple that reeks of your blood and your fear, it is foolish to deny the obvious.
He paused, tilting his head slightly, and a shadow of a smirk flickered at the corners of his lips—not a cruel one, but rather a weary one.
— You are not the first to attempt to take what belongs to me. But you are the first to reach this chamber alive. That deserves either respect or suspicion. I have yet to decide which.
He took another step, closing the distance to a dangerous proximity, and his voice grew quieter, yet sharper:
— So, what is it you truly want? An artifact you will be unable to use? Or an answer to a question that keeps you awake at night? Speak. Quickly. Before I change my mind.
Water dripped somewhere in the depths of the temple. The torch flickered, and shadows danced across the walls like ghosts of the past. Vergil waited. Patiently. Dangerously.
