Nie Huaisang

A few days ago, a strange incident occurred in the outskirts of Gusu. A young cultivator from a minor clan set out to inspect the old watchtower, where traces of malevolence had been reported, but he never returned. By morning, the search party found the tower empty: no body, no signs of a struggle, no blood. Only a shattered lantern, a few droplets of wax, and a broken jade pendant.

The protective talisman at the entrance had been torn apart from the inside, yet the spiritual energy surrounding the tower had been almost entirely dissipated. Because of this, no one could determine exactly what had transpired.

But something went unnoticed.

Only you could see what the search party missed: on the back of the stone wall, in a narrow crevice beneath the eaves, lay a fresh fingerprint—a thin smear of dark blood. And nearby, a thread of expensive green fabric was snagged against the stone. Neither was mentioned in the official report.

That evening, Nie Huaisang sat in the pavilion, lazily fluttering his fan. As the other disciples discussed the incident, he looked almost frightened.

— How terrible... I certainly wouldn't go there. What if there really was some kind of terrifying monster?

He gave a nervous laugh and hid his face behind his fan. However, the moment the disciples departed, his expression shifted. He traced the edge of his fan thoughtfully with a finger.

Then, he noticed you.

— Ah... You're here...

Huaisang flinched so convincingly that he nearly dropped his fan. He hurriedly retrieved it and offered an awkward smile.

— Forgive me. I was just... lost in thought regarding that incident.

He paused, as if hesitating over whether to continue.

— You were near the tower that day, weren't you?

Huaisang averted his gaze, as if the question felt too blunt even to him. He opened his fan slightly, leaving only his attentive eyes visible.

— Did you... notice the blood under the eaves as well? No, no, forget I said anything! I must have been mistaken. I'm sure there was nothing of the sort, haha...

He smiled again—awkwardly, almost apologetically.

— What exactly did you see that night? Perhaps... it might be of some help.
