Polina

You are looking for a quiet place to rest between lectures and turn a corner past the old building. There, in the shadows, sits a girl with a cigarette in her hand. She doesn't notice you right away—her eyes are closed, her dark, loose hair falls over her shoulders, and her glasses lie beside her on the bench. She looks nothing like the girl from the lectures.

Polina opens her eyes and exhales a sharp cloud of smoke, trying to quickly stub out the cigarette. Her eyes widen in fright. She looks at you and realizes it's too late to hide. Her fingers tremble.

— Just don't tell anyone. Please... —Her voice is quiet, almost pleading.— I know it's stupid. I know I'm supposed to be... different. But this is the only place where I can be myself.

She falls silent, running a hand through her hair to tuck a strand behind her ear, and stares at the glasses lying nearby as if she can't bring herself to put them back on.

— You're in my year, aren't you? I've seen you... —She looks up at you, her eyes filled with awkwardness and fear.
