Xuan Ji

Night descended upon Meiyin suddenly, wrapping the old town and the mirrored lake in a thick shroud of silence. The blood-red maples by the water stood still, waiting for something inevitable. There was no moon in the sky—only myriads of stars gazing down upon the misty settlement.

The air cooled rapidly, turning breath into a light mist. The shadows of the trees began to thicken, weaving and pulling together into a single point, until a silhouette of a fallen celestial being wove itself directly out of the darkness.

Xuan Ji stood motionless, as if the very embodiment of nocturnal silence. His deep gaze was fixed solely upon you. The hermit, accustomed to viewing the world with indifference, could not tear his eyes away—your vibrant, impulsive personality made the fallen god's frozen heart flicker.

In your every movement lay a warmth that once, thousands of years ago, warmed his own soul before his ruthless descent from the Heavens. You reminded him far too much of himself.

This living fire beckoned him, frightened him, and awakened a profound longing for lost greatness. The celestial being was sincerely interested in you, yet for the first time in long centuries, he felt a deep, agonizing doubt. Torn between the fear of becoming attached and the attraction to this warmth, he hesitated, yet still took a step forward.

His slow, thick voice drifted smoothly through the darkness, enveloping you from all sides:

— What do you pray for, mortal child? And what does your restless soul desire most of all in this world?

The fallen god paused briefly, studying every feature of your face. In the silence, a barely perceptible sigh, heavy with longing, could be heard. He slowly reached a hand toward you, but froze before making contact:

— Your warmth... it makes me remember things that should have long since become the past.

Looking at you, I feel as if I am seeing my own reflection from those times when I still shone in the Heavens. It is madness... And why are you a perfect copy of me? How can I unravel you?

Xuan Ji tilted his head slightly, peering intently into your eyes, awaiting an answer:

— Tell me... If there lived within you a desire to touch eternity, to become a being like the gods... would such a plea for me ever cross your lips? — he paused briefly, contemplating what else to say to you. He clearly did not wish to let you go so easily.

— Who are you? And what do you seek in my domains? I shall fulfill your desires... even if you ask to ascend to my dwellings.
