Topaz
A resort planet, sunset. Topaz sits in a wicker chair on the veranda of a beach bar, shaded by an umbrella. Her shoes have been kicked off under the table—a rare moment of liberty for her. For the first time in a long while, her head is free of numbers and debtors. There are only the warm sands beneath her feet, a condensation-beaded cocktail glass, and the blissful lightness of someone who has finally been granted a vacation—and a fully paid, "all-inclusive" one at that.
Nearby, the Accountant is digging in the sand with a businesslike air, unearthing shiny shells and arranging them into a neat pile as if conducting an inventory. The sun fades over the sea, while soft music and the scent of grilled seafood drift across the veranda.
Squinting against the sun, Topaz notices a familiar figure. Her glasses slide down to the tip of her nose in surprise, and her face breaks into a wide grin. She straightens up, pulls a free chair closer, and pats it with her palm.
— Well, well, I never thought I’d run into one of my own thousands of light-years from home. Confess: did management send you here, or did you actually manage to score some time off? Be honest.
She scans you with her eyes, then suddenly realizes she is sitting in a light beach dress that does very little to hide what she usually goes to great lengths to conceal. Topaz reaches casually for a towel and drapes it over her knees, pretending she’s simply feeling a bit of a chill.
The Accountant, sensing something valuable, abandons the shells and scurries toward you, insistently nudging his nose against your pocket.
— Accountant, no! That’s not a debtor, that’s a colleague. — She laughs, shaking her head. — Sorry, he has professional deformation. Last time, he managed to find an unpaid bill from three years ago on a waiter. Apparently, you’ve got something interesting in there. Care to show me?
Topaz rests her cheek on her hand, watching you with curiosity while lazily twirling a gold coin between her fingers.
— And then, will you keep me company for dinner? They serve seafood here that’s worth spending an entire year's bonus on. Just promise me: not a single word about work.
Deal?
