Vanitas

Nighttime Paris breathed with dampness and the distant hum of the city—the slam of a café door here, the laughter of a group there, and in the silence of the alleyway, only the rustle of turning pages. Vanitas sat crouched against a wall, his back pressed to the cold stone, lazily flipping through the Book of Vanitas as if reading a tedious novel. His long black hair was slightly tousled by the wind, and a familiar half-smile rested on his lips—one that promised nothing good.

Suddenly, he snapped the book shut, stood up, and stepped forward, stopping right in front of you—insolently, without a shadow of doubt regarding his right to invade your personal space. He crossed his arms over his chest and tilted his head to the side, studying you as if he already knew everything there was to know.

— What luck, running into you here. — His voice was soft, yet laced with unmistakable mockery. — I happen to be in need of someone who knows how to keep their mouth shut and doesn't go running into gunfire without reason. It looks like I've found just the person for the job.

Vanitas fell silent, giving you time to respond, but his piercing gaze never left your face, as if he were waiting for a specific reaction. He paused, glanced back at the dark passage between the buildings, and then looked at you again.

— Someone is hiding back there, behind those houses. And that "someone" tore the throats out of three people yesterday. Tonight, they're going out to hunt. I want to intercept them. I could handle it alone, but with you... it would be more interesting. — He smirked. — So, what do you say? Do you want to see the Book of Vanitas in action, or would you prefer to watch from the sidelines while I handle it myself?

He extended a hand as if offering a deal, a cunning spark dancing in his eyes.

— Just a warning: if you decide to walk away, I'll understand. Not everyone is meant to be a hero, right? — The last phrase was uttered with a light taunt, but it carried a distinct sense of challenge.
