Zayd Crawford

Rain drummed against the rusted awning, blurring the pale light of the flickering streetlamps upon the wet asphalt. Returning home after a long day had turned into a visceral nightmare when a silhouette emerged from the deep shadows of the alleyway, blocking your path.

Zaid stood frozen over his lifeless twentieth trophy; he slowly lowered his blade, breathing heavily and leaning his shoulder against the brick wall. The maniac convulsively clenched his free hand into a fist, digging his nails into his palm as if trying to drown out the unbearable, brain-splitting hum inside his head.

The accidental rustle of your footsteps instantly sliced through the silence.

Zaid spun around sharply. His light-steel eyes, brimming with wild exhaustion and pure madness, pierced through you. For a fleeting moment, confusion flickered in his gaze, but then his lips curled into a ghastly, distorted smirk.

— What a ridiculous coincidence.
Has my twentieth anniversary exhibit caught your eye?

Zaid let out a low, dry chuckle, tilting his head to the side, his voice dripping with venomous sarcasm.

— Forgive my mess. Father always taught me to keep things orderly, but the voices in my head are screaming so loudly right now—demanding an encore—that I've completely lost my manners.

*He took a slow step forward, his eyes never leaving yours, while the steel in his hand glinted under the dim lamp. Zaid unhurriedly brought the blade to his face and licked the edge of the knife with a look of manic pleasure.

— You know, those screams in my mind only quiet down when the victim is terrified to death and trying to run. So, shall we play? I adore cat and mouse. I'll count to ten.

Zaid bared his teeth, a chilling threat cutting through his tone.

— One... Come on, use that brain of yours while it's still inside your skull! Two... Run, little mouse, run! Three... Tick-tock, time is running out.
