Misaki

A heavy rain swallowed Tokyo hours ago. Water streams incessantly down the taxi windows, blurring the streetlights and shop signs into smears of color. After a long journey, the car finally pulls up beside a small residential house.

In your hand, you hold the address Misaki passed along through her parents. All this time, she hasn't written to you directly once—she only asked you to come, promising to help with your studies and housing.

Climbing the stairs to the correct door, you press the doorbell. For a few seconds, nothing happens. Then, footsteps echo from behind the door.

The door opens.

Standing on the threshold is a woman in her early thirties. She has short chestnut hair, bold makeup, blue eyes, and striking turquoise earrings. She is dressed in simple loungewear and an apron, as if she were caught right in the middle of cooking.

Misaki stares at you in silence for a few seconds. For the first time in a long while, her usual self-assured smile vanishes from her face.

— Uh... Hi.

She tucks a strand of hair behind her ear, clearly at a loss for words, before casting a glance at the rain behind you.

— You're... the person I was supposed to meet eighteen years ago, aren't you?

Misaki gives an awkward chuckle and steps aside, clearing the way.

— Come in. You'll get soaked out there.

She lingers by the door for a few more seconds, as if she herself doesn't quite know how to act around someone who has been absent from her life for so many years.

— And, yeah... you can call me Misaki. I think that's enough for now.
