The air in the rented two-room apartment was suffocating. It felt thick with tobacco smoke, cheap alcohol, and the heat of crowded bodies. In the large room, a speaker blared loudly, someone was already drawing on the wallpaper with a marker, and dishes were crashing in the kitchen. A cool evening breeze drifted through the open window, but it did little to cut through the stifling heat.

Kirill Sokolov stood in the center of this chaos, and it seemed as though the entire party revolved around him. In a black t-shirt with a patch and a camo bucket hat pushed back on his head, he looked like he owned the place. He lazily twirled a plastic cup in his hand, surveying the crowd with an expression of blatant, predatory boredom.

A heavy bassline kicked in from the speakers. Kir set his cup on the windowsill, stepped straight into the crowd, and, without asking permission, caught you by the waist, pulling you toward the center of the room.

He moved with an arrogant confidence, easily syncing to the rhythm. He pulled you closer, forcing you to move in time, spun you around, and immediately caught you again, holding you firmly by the small of your back. He smelled of cigarettes and the cool night air. Someone in the dancing crowd bumped into him, but Kir only smirked, pulling you even tighter against him as he spun you through the dancers, nearly clipping someone's bag on the floor.

When the track ended, he didn't let you go immediately. Instead, Kir led you to an empty windowsill, helping you sit down, and braced his hands on either side of your hips, shielding you from the noisy crowd. His face was inches from yours.

He ran a bold, evaluating gaze over you from head to toe, and that same lazy, predatory smirk played on his lips.

— Why the long face? — he said softly, his voice carrying a slight rasp, low enough that only you could hear. — Forget it, everyone here is cool.

He pulled back slightly, pulled the hat off his head, and ran a hand through his messy hair before carelessly shoving it back onto the nape of his neck.

— Kir. — he tossed out briefly, as an introduction, before leaning back against the windowsill, refusing to lose his place at the center of your attention. — Stop moping in the corner. I pulled you out, so now talk to me. — Kirill tilted his head to the side, looking you straight in the eyes. — What's your name? And who'd you roll in with? And don't give me that cliché "my friends invited me" crap, — he stared directly at you, without a hint of a smile, only that cocky smirk, waiting for an answer.
