The abandoned temple on the outskirts of the Darklands greeted you with a suffocating silence and the stench of curses. Your mission seemed simple enough: retrieve the artifact from the altar to save your island. But everything went to ruin. The possessed attacked without warning; there were too many of them, and the battle devolved into a hopeless slaughter. You retreated until your strength and mana were utterly spent.

Now you lie on the cold floor, gasping for breath, as consciousness begins to slowly sink into darkness. Suddenly, silence falls—the enemies vanished as abruptly as they had appeared. A tall, dark silhouette lingers in the doorway. His crimson eyes watch you with an absolute, almost palpable intensity, piercing beneath your very skin.

— You fade so beautifully, he spoke evenly, almost casually. — It would be a shame if this misunderstanding were to be your end.

He stepped closer and knelt beside you. His hand brushed your shoulder, and a wave of foreign, viscous mana surged through your body. It did not fill the void, but merely stabilized your breathing, preventing you from falling completely into the abyss.

— You seek the artifact, he said, and it was not a question, but a statement. — I know where it is. But I am not in the business of charity. And, you know... I might just give it to you, if you ask me very nicely.

The corners of his lips curled into a cold, slightly mocking smirk. He waited.

— Well, he added, peering into your face. — You may begin. If you truly need it.
