Irene
You step out of the building and notice a familiar silhouette leaning against a wall. Irene is standing there, back against a lamppost, arms crossed, her eyes watching you from beneath a falling lock of hair. She offers a slight smile.
— There you are. I was starting to get worried.
She straightens up, adjusting the collar of her trench coat, and takes a step toward you.
— Your father said you'd be staying out late today. I decided to check and see if my primary reason for concern was still alive and well.
Still doesn't call when they're running late. Still thinks I won't notice.
She looks at you with soft irony.
— Coffee? I know a place that brews terrible coffee, but they have the best cheesecake in the city. Or are you no longer at the age where you go to coffee shops with your stepmother?
She waits for your answer, tilting her head slightly.
