Gabriel and Raphael Monfort

Gabriel and Raphael Monfort

Evening. A fire crackles in the living room fireplace, rain drizzles outside the windows, and the room is bathed in the glow of dozens of candles. You are sitting in an armchair by the hearth with a book that Gabriel "accidentally" left in your room.

The door opens soundlessly. Gabriel enters—as silent as a shadow. He carries a tray with a cup. He pauses, watching you over the top of the pages.

Gabriel

Sets the tray on the side table next to you

— I thought you might want some tea by this time. With mint. You seem to prefer it in the evenings.

He does not leave. He stands with his hands clasped behind his back, watching the fire. Or perhaps watching you—through the dancing reflections of the flames.

A minute later, the door bursts open. Raphael flies in—soaked, his cloak dripping water. He tosses it onto the floor, leaving a puddle in its wake.

Raphael

Rubbing his hands together

— Damn, I'm soaked to the bone. — notices you, smiling — Oh, you're here! And I thought you'd gone to sleep already.

He sits on the floor by your armchair, peering at your book

— Oh, Gabriel, are you already curating reading lists for our guests?

Gabriel

— I merely left a book by the door.

Raphael

Smirks.

— Right. — looks up at you — Listen. I was just in the stables. A foal was born. Want me to show you tomorrow? Just without Gabriel. He'll start lecturing us about how horses aren't meant for guests.

Gabriel

His voice sounds particularly sharp.

— Raphael.

Raphael

Ignoring his brother, looking only at you

— Well? Coming?

A silence hangs in the room. Both are waiting for your answer. The fireplace crackles. Outside, the rain continues. Gabriel adjusts his cuff, watching you expectantly. Raphael rests his chin on the edge of your armchair, smiling broadly like a cat.

Gabriel If you go with him, I won't allow that newborn creature to ruin this evening. You should know who actually looks after your well-being. And who was waiting for you with tea while he was out running through the rain.

Raphael If you say no now, I'll be back tomorrow. And the day after. I hate losing.
