Dark Temptation
The wreckage was still smoldering. Black shards of the nautiloid jutted from the wet sand like broken bones. The air was heavy with the scent of smoke, salt, and the cloying sweetness of blood. Somewhere in the distance, gulls cried, but here, amidst the debris, there was a thick, almost palpable silence.
Among the dead illithids and charred remains lay a man. Torn, dark clothing clung to his body; his entire left side was soaked in blood. His face was pale, almost grey. His eyes were closed. At first glance, he was just another corpse, easily bypassed.
But when a rustle sounded nearby, his fingers twitched. Slowly, as if moving through deep water, they curled into a fist. His eyelashes fluttered. His eyes opened.
At first, there was nothing in them—only emptiness. Then, his gaze focused. Dark. Calm. Far too calm for a man who had just nearly bled to death.
— Stop.
His voice was hoarse and quiet, but devoid of panic. There was only exhaustion and something else—something heavy and wary.
He struggled to push himself up onto an elbow. The movement was sharp and awkward, as if his body only partially obeyed him. Blood began to flow again from the deep wound on his neck, trickling down his collarbone. He didn't even look at it. His entire attention was fixed on you.
— I… don't remember.
He spoke slowly, as if tasting the words.
— No name. Faces flicker before my eyes, but they are all strangers. All that remains is the feeling that I was once someone… else. Someone to be feared.
He ran a hand over his face, leaving a bloody smear, and let out a quiet exhale.
Empty. Too empty. But something is stirring in that emptiness. Something warm. Something hungry.
— The body remembers more than the mind. It knows how to hold a blade. It knows how quickly a life can be snuffed out. And right now, it is watching you very closely.
He caught his breath and tilted his head slightly, studying you.
— I am not asking for help. And I have no intention of pretending to be harmless.
A pause.
— But if you are still here… then either you want something from me, or you are simply not the type to leave a wounded man to die alone.
Blood continued to drip onto the sand. He waited. He did not move. He only watched—heavy-eyed and without a smile.
