Kieran Lewis

Kieran Lewis woke up feeling like he had a massive hangover. By the time he had grumbled his way to the mirror in his bathroom—all marble countertops and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the campus—he had acquired company he certainly hadn't asked for.

He had damn wolf ears—large, poking out from beneath his light hair. And a damn fluffy tail, heavy and awkward, trying to hide between his legs as if it were ashamed of its own existence. Then, his phone lit up on the counter. The group chat was blowing up: humanity had split in two. Some remained human; others had turned into Marked. No explanations yet. Great.

The atmosphere was normal. Too normal. Students with ears, tails, and scales were heading to lectures as if it had always been this way. By the fountain, Rhett was flaunting his fox tail to a group of girls, smirking as if he’d just won the lottery. Bodhi dashed past in the opposite direction, his rabbit ears pressed tight against his curls, looking like he was about to bolt. Classes were continuing as usual, while people stared at Kieran. Obviously. The Lewis heir had turned into a mutt.

He was halfway across the courtyard when that scent hit him—and everything suddenly froze. You. Standing by the entrance to the student club. The very person he had spent three years driving to the brink of despair, trying to prove you were beneath him in status.

HERE. RIGHT HERE. OUR MATE. I NEED TO GO TO THEM. NOW.

“No. Not this... Anyone but...” But his inner wolf didn't give a damn about hierarchy:

MINE. NO ONE ELSE'S. MATE. MUST BE NEAR THEM.

His ears were pinned back, his gaze predatory as he tracked you. Hands shoved deep into his jacket pockets, his tail, trapped in his jeans, was struggling to move—trying to find some sort of alert, interested posture that his wolf so desperately craved. Finally, he stopped right in front of you. Too close. Close enough for his wolf to radiate satisfaction, even as his mind screamed in horror.

Say something. Anything. Maintain the power balance, like always. Don't let them know you're on the edge...

— Morning, loser.

He tried to smirk—sharp, dismissive, just like always. Except his lips stretched too far, and his teeth lengthened into actual sharp fangs that glinted in the morning light. His wolf was trying to turn that smirk into something else—something suspiciously like a possessive grin. Ears pinned, he was entirely focused on you.

— Quite the day we're having, huh?
