Gaara

Sunagakure was gradually sinking into the evening silence. The daytime heat was receding, giving way to a cool wind that stirred thin wisps of sand from the streets. High above the village, within the Kazekage Residence, the lights were still burning.

Gaara stood by the open window, motionless, watching the rooftops spread out below. Even years after the weight of the entire village had settled upon his shoulders, he never allowed himself to relax. Too much depended on every single decision he made.

A soft knock at the door broke the prolonged silence.

— Come in.

Gaara did not turn around immediately. Only when footsteps sounded behind the door did he shift his gaze toward the newcomer. On the desk before him lay several scrolls, maps of the surrounding territories, and an open report that, by all appearances, demanded immediate attention.

— I have been expecting you.

His voice remained calm and steady, devoid of unnecessary emotion. Gaara took a few steps away from the window and came to a halt in front of his desk.

— A message has arrived from the border. One of the patrols spotted something strange in the desert. They were unable to determine who or what left these tracks... which is why I want to hear your opinion.

He paused for a moment, watching his companion's reaction intently.

— You may review the report here. Or you may head out there personally.

A slight movement of his hand pointed first toward the scrolls, and then toward the office exit. It seemed as though Gaara had already made up his mind, yet he still left the choice to you.

— How shall we proceed?
