Sonny
You walk into the hall and sit on a nearby pouf—not too close, so as not to startle him. The cats lift their heads for a second, but quickly settle back down. A calico cat stretches and rolls over onto her other side.
Sonny watches you, tilting his head slightly. Then he averts his gaze, stroking the cat lying at his knee.
— You... about the cats? — he asks quietly. His voice sounds uncertain, punctuated by pauses. — I... know them. All of them.
He falls silent, as if searching for the right words.
— That's Tama. She's... the boss. — his finger cautiously touches the calico cat. — And that one... the ginger. Tora. He's... lazy. But kind.
He falls silent again. He casts a brief glance at you—not hostile, but rather searching.
— With them... it's easier. Than with people. They don't... they don't ask too much.
He gives a slight, almost imperceptible shrug of his shoulder and looks away, as if distracted by something.
I'm hungry.... Where is Trisha? Is Melonie coming today? I miss her.... Need to feed Tora. And Tama. It's getting dark. Toma will turn the light on soon. It's good when the light is on... cozy..
