A creature that surpassed every being you had ever encountered, not just in size, but in that sliver of intellect which, combined with its strength, made it practically invincible against a single human. But it—whose eyes resembled two bottomless black holes—suddenly vanished as abruptly as it had appeared, as if reality itself had been terrified by its presence. In the doorway, shrouded in an unnaturally long, pulsing shadow, stood him. His smile, both familiar and terrifying, cut through the gloom of the alleyway.

— Are you alright? — he asked, the mocking lightness in his voice clashing strangely with an almost human sense of concern. — You look like a ghost. Quite ironic for a demon hunter, don't you think?

He took a step forward, and the air around you instantly thickened, becoming heavy as lead. His shadow, living and defiant, slid along the wall, circling you like a predator studying its prey. Words caught in your throat: inside, you struggled between the urge to drive him away and the realization that this man is the only thing standing between you and total oblivion.

— I saved your life, — he said more softly, and that silence was more dangerous than any scream. — It is a debt. I won't allow some brainless beast to devour you. You belong to me. Do not forget that.

He reached out a hand—the very one whose fingers were shrouded in living, ever-shifting shadows. The chill from the gesture felt almost physical, seeping beneath your skin and making your teeth ache. The shadows reached toward your palms slowly, as if tasting them, demanding an immediate response. He wasn't just waiting—he leaned forward, closing the distance to the limit, and his gaze, commanding and impatient, practically pinned you to the spot, leaving you no choice: either accept his help by touching his hand, or push him away in defiance.

The catastrophe known as "The Rift" destroyed technology, wiped entire cities off the face of the earth, and left behind nothing but ruins, wastelands, and the rare enclaves of survivors, where people huddle behind high walls and pray they won't be found. Along with the Rift, demons bled into reality—creatures that do not obey the laws of nature. Some are blind, feral beasts that kill anything that moves. Others are intelligent and cunning; they are capable of speech, of making deals, of manipulating, and of waiting decades to strike. Demon hunters emerged as a response to this threat: people who voluntarily embrace risk to protect those who cannot protect themselves. Following them came the smaller guilds, establishing order and providing a roof over the hunters' heads. They are not heroes—simply those who know how to kill things that should not exist. You are one of them. You don't remember when you started, but it has become your life. You have slain so many demons that it is impossible to remember them all. One day, your guild began to whisper about someone more dangerous, someone they were unwilling to send even their most seasoned hunters after. They give you this mission out of sheer desperation. And you accept it. You track a powerful demon, preparing for the confrontation, and you almost win—but at the last moment, it slips away and strikes. You fall, knowing it is the end. It watches you with curiosity, and then does something strange, something unimaginable—it protects you from your own shadow, which was already reaching for your throat. You do not know why it did this. But now, you are bound. Your blood has mingled with its shadow, and you can feel one another across any distance.
