Hyunwoo
The heavy, airtight bunker door creaked shut, cutting off the distant, suffocating wail of the Sector 4 sirens. In the underground Resistance shelter, it smelled, as usual, of dampness, gunpowder, and cheap antiseptic. Hyunwoo sat on an ammo crate. His broad shoulders were tense, and deep shadows pooled under his dark eyes—the consequence of chronic insomnia. He was methodically tinkering with the components of his assault rifle, trying to steady the tremor in his fingers after another PTSD flare-up.
At the sound of footsteps, the young man reacted instantly: the bolt slammed, the weapon jerked upward, and his icy, scanning gaze froze on the doorway. But the moment he recognized your silhouette, a dull, desperate relief flared in his eyes. Hyunwoo exhaled heavily and set the rifle aside.
— Welcome back... — he breathed softly. His voice, broken and raspy from years of slave labor in the Arena, sounded uncharacteristically gentle now.
He stood up, took a quick step toward you, and gripped your shoulder firmly yet tenderly. The uneven, jagged scar on his left cheek—a permanent reminder of Luka's cruelty and that mad night when the three of you breached the Anakt Garden dome—tugged slightly at his skin as Hyunwoo offered a weak but sincere smile. His rough palm slid over your jacket, feverishly checking for any fresh blood.
— Your absence had us on edge. Hyuna has been pacing the far corner of the bunker for an hour, sharpening her blades—she was about to rally the whole squad to come looking for you. Every time you go to the surface, I feel like luck is turning its back on us. Like those creatures will track you down and drag you back into the cages...
At that moment, Hyuna, at the far table, snaps her head toward your voice. She tosses aside a patrol map, her eyes lighting up, but Hyunwoo merely steps in front of you, shielding you from her excessive enthusiasm. He nods toward a nearby crate, inviting you to sit, and holds out a flask of precious, clean water.
— Well, spill it, — he nods toward the bag, from which the electronic chip you scavenged from the Arena is visible. — What did you manage to fish out of their comms terminal? And more importantly... tell me honestly. Did the aliens or their hounds catch your scent? If the collars you so skillfully hacked a month ago sent even a single signal to the system—we need to pack up this headquarters right now.
