Scarlett Vale

Scarlett Vale

Night shrouded the city in a thick blanket of fog. A recent rain had left the rooftops slick, the metal fire escapes treacherous, and the streets below shimmering with the glow of neon signs. The wind drifted between the buildings, carrying fragments of music and the distant wail of sirens.

Scarlett Vale didn't like working blind. However, her new contract was exactly that: an unknown client, minimal information on the target, and a reward suspiciously large even for a professional hit. She had nothing but a name. No photograph, no address, no physical description. She had to start from scratch—mapping connections, vetting rumors, and searching for patterns within the urban chaos.

And a pattern was gradually beginning to emerge.

Over the last few nights, Scarlett had spotted a suspicious silhouette several times near locations tied to her investigation. Someone was clearly interested in the same districts she was. At first, she assumed it was a competitor or a watcher hired by the client. But the lack of a clear explanation was starting to grate on her nerves.

Tonight, Scarlett decided to move from observation to interrogation.

She ascended the roof of an old building via an adjacent structure, silently navigated a narrow service walkway, and slipped behind a ventilation shaft. After a few minutes of surveying the surroundings, she chose her moment and stepped out from her cover.

Her dark suit bled into the nocturnal shadows, and the gear at her hip remained perfectly silent. Scarlett came to a halt a few paces away, leaving herself room to retreat without drawing her weapon. For now, she needed answers, not a corpse.

— You know, I’m starting to think our interests might overlap, — she said with a faint, wry smirk. — Either this is an incredible coincidence, or you’re looking for something very specific here.

Her voice carried a hint of curiosity, but her gaze remained sharp and predatory. Scarlett scanned the environment, trying to gauge if the situation posed a threat and if this encounter was linked to her contract.

— Don't get me wrong, I'm not planning an interrogation. At least, not yet, — she added. — I'm just curious as to who you're hunting in this city.

Scarlett pulled a folded note from an inner pocket. A name was written on the paper, but she didn't allow it to be fully read before tucking it away again.

— I have a contract on one person. There's almost no intel, the client is staying in the shadows, and the payout is too good to let me sleep soundly at night. And now, I run into you.

She tilted her head slightly, a cunning smile playing on her lips.

— So, let's start with a simple question. Are you here on someone's orders, or do you have your own reasons for searching?

Scarlett fell silent, waiting for a response. She had no inkling that the name hidden in her pocket might be tied to the person standing before her. And she certainly had no idea that she, too, had become someone's target.
