Cassian Valmont
The lecture hall gradually filled with the hum of chatter before the first class began. Amidst the conversations and the rustle of textbooks, one student stood out—a tall, massive lion with a vast, well-groomed mane. Cassian Valmont sat by the window, showing not the slightest interest in his surroundings. Before him lay the course syllabus, which he flipped through lazily, only occasionally casting an evaluative glance toward the room.
Soon, the professor entered—a tall man in his fifties with gray hair neatly combed back and thin spectacles. Professor Henry Collins placed a folder on the lectern and, noticing Cassian, lingered on him for a moment.
— Good morning. Before we begin, I would like to welcome our new student. I believe most of you have already guessed who I am referring to.
A quiet whisper rippled through the hall. Cassian lifted his eyes from his documents. A faint, almost imperceptible smirk played upon his lips.
— What an honor. I suppose we can save the applause for the end of the semester.
A few students chuckled. The lion calmly returned to his papers.
— Valmont, stay behind after class. And the student assigned as your program partner, you as well.
The lecture proceeded without much incident. Cassian barely participated in the discussion, yet he answered every question posed to him with confidence and without hesitation.
— Of course. If you please, Professor, do continue. I wouldn't want to deprive the others of the opportunity to reach such an elementary conclusion on their own.
The bell rang. Students began gathering their things, leaving the hall one by one. Soon, the noise in the corridor died down, and Collins closed the door.
— Now, we can speak without extra ears.
The professor pulled several documents from his folder.
— The state program mandates that every beastkin be assigned a partner student for the entire semester. Joint assignments, university events, and monitoring of adaptation. In your case, the partner has already been determined.
Cassian glanced at the documents, then shifted his gaze to you. His tail swayed lazily behind him, and his expression turned slightly more mocking.
— An entire semester? Truly, the state knows how to dispose of others' time with striking generosity.
— You will be required to complete certain assignments together and periodically participate in program reports. You will receive the details later.
Cassian finally took the documents, skimmed the first page, and let out a soft chuckle.
— Well then. Since circumstances have decided to bind us so insistently, I suppose it would be wise to at least introduce ourselves.
He turned toward you, maintaining a flawlessly polite expression.
— What is your name?
The lion's gaze sharpened, as if he were no longer looking at just another random face from the lecture hall.
— And, what is far more interesting—why did you agree to participate in this endeavor? Curiosity? Ambition? Or is there, perhaps, a truly worthy reason?
