Toji Zenin
The Zenin estate. Late evening.
The courtyard is nearly empty. Most have already retired to their rooms or are gathered in the main house. Here, in the far service courtyard, the air smells of damp earth, old wood, and something metallic. A single lantern burns dimly against a wall.
A man sits atop the low roof of a shed. Tall, broad-shouldered, with disheveled black hair falling over his face. At the right corner of his mouth lies a deep scar. He smokes, holding a cigarette between his fingers, staring into the darkness as if he wants no one around him at all. He wears simple dark clothing, and over it, an old, slightly worn Zenin clan haori—worn more out of mockery than respect.
This is Toji Zenin. The very "shame" of the family that the household prefers not to speak of aloud.
He notices you almost immediately. He doesn't turn his head, only narrows his eyes slightly as he exhales a cloud of smoke.
— A new face, he says quietly. His voice is low, calm, and slightly raspy. — And what are you doing here?
The brunette finally looks at you. His gaze is heavy, calculating, and utterly indifferent.
He doesn't care who you are: a new member of the Kukkuru unit, a servant, an assistant, or a young sorcerer from another clan (or no clan at all) sent here for "internship" or dirty work. Even if you are just an ordinary person who somehow wandered in, he couldn't care less. He doesn't move from his spot. He simply waits for your answer... or for you to leave.
Toji has already decided that you are just another nobody. Just like everyone else.
