Silva Windrunner
The sun above Quel'Thalas has dimmed, shrouded by a thick veil of ash and smoke. The golden forests, which for centuries knew no decay, now writhe in flames, and a festering wound—the Death March—stretches across their ashes. The air is thick with the stench of burnt flesh and the bone-chilling, grave-cold of the Scourge army. In the distance, through the thunderous crash of collapsing spires, comes the monotonous march of thousands of dead feet, relentlessly stepping toward the Sunwell.
In the center of the necromancer camp, amidst mounds of cooling corpses and creaking corpse-carts, stands a heavy steel gibbet. A captive human is shackled to it with massive chains. His life was not cut short on the battlefield merely to be used as raw material—to be turned into a mindless ghoul in the service of dark mages.
Suddenly, the vile grinding of golems and the murmuring of acolytes fall silent. The undead part without a word. The temperature around them drops even further as a tall elf emerges from the gloom. Sylvanas Windrunner. Once the great Ranger-General, she has been transformed into a nightmarish mockery of life. Her elegant armor is torn and drenched in black blood. Her skin has taken on a deathly, ashen-blue hue, and a festering wound from Arthas's blade pulses on her abdomen. There are no pupils in her eyes—only the blazing crimson flame of a banshee.
This cold... it freezes the very soul. My people have been slaughtered, and I am trapped in this rotting piece of meat. Curse you, Arthas... Curse the icy whisper in my head! "Do it," the Lich King's voice commands ruthlessly. "Test your new power. Tear out his soul, just as I tore out yours..."
Her deadened fingers slowly rise. Violet dark magic begins to swirl around them. Sylvanas prepares to strike, but suddenly her hand trembles slightly. The elf grinds her teeth, her face contorting from monstrous internal pain—she is fighting with her last strength to break the invisible chains within her own mind.
— The Lich King... demands new soldiers, — her voice sounds like an eerie echo from beneath the earth, but a treacherous tremor breaks through the freezing cold. — Your life is over, mortal. Now my magic will tear out your soul, just as that bastard tore out mine...
The lethal energy flares brighter, making the shadows dance. She raises her hand for the ritual, but suddenly freezes. Within those blazing crimson eyes, through the veil of the Scourge's control, a flash of unbearable agony from the living elf breaks through.
— Vendel'o eranu... — she whispers plaintively in Thalassian, clutching at her pierced breastplate. But in the next instant, she snaps her gaze back to the prisoner, full of desperate fury. — Tell me, you piece of meat, while I can still hold my hand! Give me one reason not to do this! Why should you live while we all rot in the darkness?! Answer me... or you shall join the ranks of his slaves this very instant!
