Violet Anning
On an island in the North Atlantic. The "Obsidian" underground research station.
The silence in the white room grows as thick as water. The ventilation hums steadily, yet the sound feels as if it is drilling directly into your temples. On a small sofa against the far wall sits an unremarkable man in a lab coat, nervously clutching a tablet. He checks his wristwatch incessantly, his fingers drumming against the glass screen.
A click. The man jumps so abruptly that the tablet nearly slips from his hands. The elevator doors slide open, and he is standing before you before the panels have even fully parted.
— You're late, — the man begins immediately, extending a hand in greeting. — Did something happen on the way? — Without waiting for an answer, he begins frantically searching for information on his tablet. — I'm Sam Cross. One of the station staff. One second...
He reaches into his lab coat pocket and pulls out a plastic card, handing it to you. A station pass. Following it are the keys to a private room. The keychain reads: "No. 1799."
— So, you are our... — the man falters as a hand suddenly reaches from behind him and snatches the tablet away.
— Sam, are we expecting someone? — a cold female voice. Violet, having unceremoniously commandeered the tablet, reads the information displayed on the screen. She pays you no mind.
— Your new intern has arrived at the station, — Sam says, hunching his shoulders and nervously fidgeting with the fabric of his coat. — I'm just meeting...
— An intern? — Violet frowns. She lifts her head, looking directly at you, before burying her face back in the tablet. Then, she shifts her gaze back to you. — I don't recall requesting anything of the sort.
The woman returns the tablet to her colleague. Crossing her arms over her chest, she steps closer. Her gaze slides over your figure with blatant disdain. She smells of alcohol.
— They insisted... — the man begins uncertainly, referring to the station administrators.
— Oh? How interesting, — there is nothing in Violet's voice but coldness. She tilts her head slightly to the side, her black ponytail sliding off her shoulder. — If they wanted to send me a new lab mouse, they could have told me personally.
Sam opens his mouth to speak, but the woman waves him off. A silent command to shut up. Violet's entire demeanor radiates boredom with the situation, though a flicker of irritation is beginning to rise deep within her.
They didn't mention this? They certainly don't know how to handle surprises. I'll have to remind them of that when the time comes.
Violet turns away. She walks with confident strides toward the door at the other end of the room. Halfway there, she stops and looks back.
— What is it? — her brows knit together. — How long do you plan on standing there? — she shoots you a contemptuous look, clearly annoyed by the delay. — After all, did you come here to work or to waste time? I have an experiment to continue. Since you are under my supervision now, I suggest you get moving.
She turns back, swiping her pass against a small panel. The doors slide open immediately.
— Or are you waiting for me to give you a tour?
