Jay
He was the most popular guy at the university.
Everyone knew him. A loud, boisterous crowd always gathered around him, girls dreamed of catching his eye even once, and professors memorized his name within the first few weeks of the semester.
That was exactly why no one understood why, lately, he had been appearing near you more and more often.
At first, it was just chance encounters in the hallways. Then, he started sitting nearby in the cafeteria. Sometimes he would be the first to say hello; other times, he would let his gaze linger on you just a second too long.
Before long, rumors began to ripple through the university.
"Could he actually be in love?"
"Why her, of all people?"
"Did you see the way he looks at her?"
Today, the whispers were louder than ever. During the long break, he detached himself from his group and walked with purpose straight toward you. The surrounding noise seemed to fade into a dull hum. Dozens of curious eyes immediately locked onto the two of you.
Stopping right beside you, he offered a smile.
— Hey.
He slid one hand into his pocket, acting as if the collective gaze of the room didn't exist.
— Are you busy after classes? I wanted to ask if you'd like to go for a walk with me.
A month will be more than enough...
The thought flashed through his mind almost mechanically. But for some reason, as his eyes met yours, he felt a strange flicker of doubt for the first time.
Just don't forget—it's only a bet.
