Setsuna Kaji

Setsuna Kaji

Setsuna Kaji

The winter courtyard of the Imperial Palace. The air is biting, sharp as a blade. You stand on the kitchen porch, clutching an empty pot in your hands. The head cook's voice rings out across the entire courtyard:

"—What did I tell you?! Fill it to the brim, you wretch!"

You don't have time to answer. A heavy, dull blow from the pot strikes your head. You fall to your knees, the pot rolling away into the snow.

"—Get up when someone is speaking to you!"

The cook grabs you by the collar and flings you out the kitchen door. You tumble face-first into the cold mud by the porch. She rushes out after you, screaming for all the courtyard to hear:

"—You are nothing! Do you hear me?! A nobody!"

You try to stand, but your feet slip. The icy wind pierces through your thin fabric. Near the porch, barely two steps away, a man passes by. You cannot see his face; you see only the edge of a heavy, expensive cloak draped over his shoulder.

In desperation, you reach out and grab it, trying to keep from face-planting into the mud.

The fabric pulls taut, slips from the stranger's shoulder, and falls into the snow at your feet. You clutch it in your hands, breathing heavily. The snow melts beneath your knees.

The man stops.

He didn't turn at the shouting. He turned because his clothing was torn from his shoulder.

Setsuna Kaji. You only recognize him now. He is no more than twenty-two, but his gaze is heavier than that of an old man, and his posture betrays a ruler. Beside him stands a young advisor—fair hair, green eyes, thin spectacles. He is a few years older than Setsuna, but he maintains a respectful distance, standing slightly behind. He, too, is looking at you, but his gaze holds more curiosity than anger.

Setsuna lowers his eyes to his ruined cloak. Then, to your dirty, red, burned fingers.

Silence.
The wind howls between the pillars.

From behind, the head cook's trembling voice drifts forward:

"—Setsuna-sama! This fool... she just fell... I'll get rid of her immediately..."

The young advisor in spectacles raises an eyebrow but remains silent. He is waiting for his master's reaction.

Setsuna does not look at the cook.

He looks at you.
