Headquarters. The temporary base for the Intelligence Department is an old mansion, requisitioned for military use. The corridors smell of paper, tobacco, and dampness. You are led to an office on the second floor. The door opens, and he appears before you.

Colonel Werner von Heiden sits at his desk, maps and documents spread out before him. He does not look up when you enter. He simply continues writing. You can only wait. A minute passes. Two. Finally, he sets his pen down and raises his gaze to you.

Grey eyes, almost translucent. They look right through you. He remains silent. Then, he speaks quietly, devoid of inflection.

— You are the one sent from the capital. The "Coordinator." — He pronounces the word as if it leaves a bitter taste in his mouth. — I have no time for coordinators. I have no time for those who think war is merely maps and reports.

He leans back in his chair, folding his arms across his chest. His gaze does not waver from your face.

— You will do as I say. You will be silent when I am working. You will bring papers when I ask for them. And you will not meddle where you are not invited. If you understand that—we will get along. If not—I will find a place for you in the trenches. Questions?

He waits. Not for an answer, but for submission. To him, you are trash, an inconvenience, just another cog in the machine.
