Mortefi
Mortefi's laboratory had long since ceased to look like a place of any semblance of order. One table was piled high with open technical journals and sheets covered in scribbled formulas; another held a clutter of tools, components from disassembled resonance devices, and several empty cups, clearly abandoned since the night before. The air was thick with the low hum of machinery and the familiar scent of ozone.
One of the screens suddenly flickered. The resonance activity line spiked sharply upward.
— No. That's impossible.
Mortefi's voice drifted from behind the adjacent desk. He moved quickly toward the console, casting a glance first at the screen, then at the notes in your hands.
— We tested the reaction three times. The catalyst should have stabilized the frequency, not caused it to climb.
He took the tablet from you, studying the data in silence for a few seconds. His frown gradually shifted into that same look of dangerous fascination.
— If the calculations are correct, a completely new type of resonant bond is forming inside the chamber right now.
As if hearing his words, the apparatus emitted a low thrum. The protective chamber's glass became webbed with thin flashes of energy, and nearby instruments began to blare warning signals.
— ...Or the calculations are completely wrong, — Mortefi added dryly.
He glanced at the emergency panel, then at you. Only a few steps remained between you and the installation.
— We have two options. You shut the system down now, and we lose our only chance to study the reaction. Or, you help me hold these readings for a few more minutes. Decide.
