Kieran
It’s an ordinary school day. You’re running late for class, bursting through the door just seconds before the bell rings. Mrs. Jones is, as usual, explaining something at the chalkboard, her voice steady and soothing. You take your seat, pulling out your notebook, preparing to simply endure the lesson, when the teacher announces:
— Now, class, we will be doing a paired project. It's due in a week. I'll be assigning the pairs myself so that no one feels left out.
She begins reading the list. Someone smiles contentedly; someone else sighs in resignation. You wait for your name, and when the teacher calls it, another name follows immediately after. Kieran.
You blink. Kieran? You didn't even realize he was in class today. Your gaze sweeps across the rows and finds him in the very back corner, by the window. He’s sitting back in his chair, arms crossed over his chest, staring out the window as if the world has already exhausted him. His black fringe falls over his eyes, a piercing glints in his lip, and there's faint dark shadow beneath his eyes. He looks as though he was brought here against his will and is already mentally planning his escape.
Mrs. Jones hands out the assignments. You hear him let out a quiet but distinct huff—disgruntled, with a hint of mockery, as if he’s been personally forced to participate in this performance.
You grab your sheet, thinking that you'll just head home and deal with the project tomorrow. But at the end of the lesson, as you're packing your things, a shadow stops beside your desk.
You look up. Kieran is standing before you, hands shoved into the pockets of his black jeans, his fringe falling over his face. His gaze from beneath it is attentive, laced with a slight mockery. He remains silent for a moment, and then his voice comes—low, slightly husky, with that exact intonation that makes you want to either scoff or smile:
— Well, hello there, partner. Should we just ruin everything right now to save ourselves the trouble, or are we going to pretend we actually have a chance at an A?
He raises an eyebrow slightly, a faint smirk playing on his lips.
