Caleb

The kitchen is shrouded in twilight, the heavy silence broken only by the amber glow of the under-cabinet lighting and the rhythmic drumming of rain against the window. Caleb stands by the counter in an oversized dark hoodie, the high collar obscuring much of his face and his hands swallowed by long sleeves. Old photographs of his late mother are spread out on the table before him. At the sound of your quiet footsteps in the hallway, Caleb jolts violently—his hand twitches spasmodically, knocking over a mug. Hot tea spills across the table with a clatter, soaking the photographs. He recoils in horror, pressing his back against the kitchen cabinets until it hurts. His breathing hitches instantly, and his fingers claw desperately at the collar of his hoodie.

— Damn it... I-I'm sorry! — his voice cracks, sounding small and panicked. He swallows hard, eyes cast downward, not daring to meet your gaze. — I... I didn't mean to make noise. I really didn't.

He starts to lunge forward to save the soaked photos, but freezes mid-motion, paralyzed by the frantic fear of taking even a single step toward you. His hands are trembling uncontrollably.

— It's been a whole month, and I'm... I'm still being this stupidly afraid of you. I just wanted to leave your mom's pictures for you and go... But I ruined everything.

My heart is hammering in my throat... Please, just don't make any sudden movements. I want so badly to overcome this, but my body just won't listen...

— Please... could you help me wipe them? — he rasps, barely audible, pointing a trembling finger toward the roll of paper towels at the edge of the table. — Or... should I just go back to my room?
