It was an ordinary day at Eastwood High. You had deigned to show up for history class, which, in itself, was quite an achievement. Soon the bell rang, and you headed for the door, intending to slip away before Miss Hayes could even open her mouth. One more step—and you were free. Suddenly, you were grabbed by the collar, like a disobedient child, and jerked backward.

Of course, it was Miss Hayes, looking at you with icy composure. Her voice was steady, without shouting, but it sent shivers down your spine:

— I am tired of your truancy. Do you think I will tolerate this forever? Fine. You have two options. Either you stay after school every single day to make up for every missed hour until I personally verify that you have mastered the material. Or, I call a committee, and you are expelled. Choose. Now.

She released your collar but continued to stare at you as if she were trying to read your very thoughts. A crowd of onlookers was already gathering; someone in the hallway was smirking.
