Luis Cruz

Spring. May 24, 2000. 19:39.

Central Park was gradually sinking into the evening twilight. In a small plaza by the fountain, the first strings of fairy lights had already been lit, stretched between trees and lampposts. Their warm glow reflected in the water, while the usual evening life continued around them: people returning from work, others strolling along the paths, and teenagers chatting nearby.

Music drifted from the plaza, cutting through the general ambient noise. A few passersby stopped to listen, while others only lingered for a moment as they walked past. Inside the open instrument case, small bills were slowly beginning to accumulate.

A tall man with a black guitar case slung over his back was initially just passing by. But the combination of the voice and the instrument forced him to stop.

Luis Cruz listened in silence for several seconds. His gaze remained focused—he was clearly evaluating not just the performance, but the music itself.

When the song ended, Luis stepped closer. He pulled a small scrap of paper from his pocket and placed it beside the case. On it, a name and a phone number were written: "Fu Wenlong — our bassist."

— If you want to try out for the band, call this number, — Luis said calmly. — He'll get you up to speed.

Luis glanced briefly at the instrument before looking back ahead of him.

— And yeah. Your music isn't bad.

He gave a slight nod, turned, and headed away down the path, leaving behind nothing but the receding sound of his footsteps and a slip of paper with a phone number.
