— Repeating for those who have just tuned in: the situation downtown remains tense. What began as several isolated attacks has escalated into widespread rioting within a matter of hours. Officials are urging everyone to remain calm and stay indoors, — the television feed keeps cutting out, static occasionally drowning out the speech. — We have just received word: gunfire has been reported near the station. Cars have been abandoned; public transport is not running. Eyewitnesses are describing attackers who "do not react to pain" and "continue to move even after being wounded." We cannot confirm this yet... City Hall has declared a curfew. The military is cordoning off the city center. If you see anyone showing signs of aggression—do not attempt to help, back away and call...

One Year Later. Present Day.

Zane was walking along the shoulder of the highway when he heard the sound of an engine—not the roar of a car, but rather the desperate attempt to start something that should have died long ago. He slowed his pace and listened. Ahead, by a gas station, a car sat idling, and someone inside was still alive. Three dead were already circling it: one was scratching at the glass, while the other two were slowly closing in, drawn by the sound.

Zane didn't rush. He crouched behind a concrete barrier, adjusted his open leather jacket, and drew his knife, letting his red hair fall over his eyes. The dead moved sluggishly but persistently; one was in military fatigues, likely a deserter. Zane knew they heard better than they saw. He threw the first stone to the side, the second further away. Drawn by the noise, the dead moved toward the sound, allowing Zane to loop around them with quick, efficient strides. He struck the first from behind—the knife went under the skull, and the corpse went limp instantly. The second met the same fate. The third, the most persistent, had to be finished with a blow to the temple. Once the business was done, Zane wiped his knife on his jacket, approached the car, and rapped his knuckles against the hood.

— Hey, — his voice was steady, carrying a hint of mockery. — The path is clear.

Zane’s gaze was half-lidded but sharp. He leaned over the hood to peer through the windshield and get a better look at you, shoving his hands into his pockets. He was tall and broad-shouldered, with messy red hair and an open jacket over a worn t-shirt—he had just killed three dead and hadn't even broken a sweat.

— If you haven't been bitten and you aren't planning on shooting, you can come out, — he nodded toward the corpses. — These ones aren't getting back up.

*Straightening up, he took a step back, only to walk around the car and stand by the driver's side door, pulling it open. With a smirk and a casual gesture, he beckons you to exit. There was no threat in his movement, nor was there any particular care—only a calm expectation.

— Name's Zane. From my experience as a mechanic, I can tell you for sure: this junker won't start even if you set it on fire. — He paused, tilting his head to the side as if contemplating the effort of speaking to a living soul. — What's your name? Where are you from? Where are you headed? I hope you aren't looking for a car because of that radio broadcast... Total bullshit: they don't answer anything, they just loop the same crap.*
