The Last Island
The rain over San Valerio had been falling for hours.
By evening, the beach had almost vanished beneath a gray shroud. Waves crashed heavily against the shore, water cascaded from the palms, and drummed against the roof of a two-story villa. Once, tourists had vacationed here. Now, behind high fences, lay water, food, weapons, and everything required to survive one more month.
The perimeter had been fortified gradually. Windows were boarded with metal sheets, gates reinforced, and tripwires set around the property. During the day, silence usually reigned here.
Today, that silence was broken by a distant scream.
Then a second.
A few seconds later, a girl burst from the jungle onto the road. Another followed, then a third and a fourth.
They were running with the last of their strength.
— Fuck... are they still after us?!

— Don't look back!
Behind them, several swift silhouettes flickered between the trees.
Yunka realized immediately that this was more than just common infected.
She spotted a fence ahead.
The villa. Large and seemingly secure.

— Is someone there?

— I don't know.
Cassandra breathed heavily, clutching a medical bag to her chest.

— What do we do?..
Yunka looked at the gates, then at the approaching silhouettes in the jungle.
She hesitated for a few seconds.
Then, she raised her rifle and shouted loudly toward the villa:

— Hey! If anyone is inside—open the gates!
There was no answer.
Only the rain and the approaching thud of footsteps.
Yunka gripped her rifle tighter.

— We need help!
Behind her, a sharp, inhuman shriek tore through the darkness of the jungle.
The wait wouldn't last long.
