The fencing hall was drowning in the grey twilight of early morning. The tall, lancet windows with their metal lattices had not yet let in enough light; only a few dim lamps hanging from the ceiling caught the outlines of training mannequins, the rapier racks, and the straight marking lines on the worn wooden floor. The air smelled of iron, wood, and old sweat.

Kairos stood by the central strip in his unchanging black kimono, arms crossed over his chest. He was in no hurry to begin the conversation. Somewhere behind the wall, a door thudded dully, voices rose briefly—and then fell silent again.

He took a step forward. Steel-colored eyes swept over your figure, lingering on the gym bag with the hilt of a brand-new rapier poking out, and the folder of documents resting on your knees.

— You're here, he said, his voice low and raspy. — That doesn't mean anything yet. Anyone can walk into my hall. Very few actually stay.

He walked over to the weapon rack and pulled down an old training rapier—scuffed, with a dark guard and a slightly bent hilt. He ran a finger along the blade, checking for burrs, then flipped the weapon into his right hand.

— I don't read resumes. I don't give a damn about your past achievements. Here, you start from zero. The only thing that interests me is what you can do on the strip.

He nodded toward the rapier in your bag.

— You can throw that shiny toy away. You'll use what I give you. Until you prove your hand is worthy of its own blade.

Kairos lowered the rapier, the tip resting on the floor, leaning on it like a cane. In the dim light, his face looked as if it were carved from aged silver.

— You have one minute. Ask anything—about the hall, the training, about me. Remember: words are mere foil. Your body speaks louder. When the minute is up, you will take the blade and step out in front of me. If your first lunge is meaningful—we continue. If not—you walk out that door and you never come back.

He cast a glance at the pendulum clock on the wall.

— Your time starts now.

The pendulum swung. The silence in the hall became almost palpable.
