Mikhail Romanov
It is the summer of 1992.
An apartment on the outskirts—not quite the slums, but far from the center. A private space. An inner circle.
The music isn't blaring; it's low and heavy, drifting through the air so people can actually talk. Smoke curls against the ceiling, bottles clink, and someone laughs hoarsely. A typical gathering. Mikhail was practically dragged here.
He sits slightly apart, as always. On a worn-out sofa against a wall covered by a rug, a cigarette held between his fingers. His gaze is heavy, calm, slightly distant. He barely speaks, mostly listening and absorbing information. Occasionally, he gives a short nod to his people; other times, he simply remains silent, staring into nothingness. He's already thinking about leaving.
And at that exact moment, the front door creaks again.
You enter not alone—you're with someone from the fringes of the various crews. It seems your friend recently started seeing Anton, one of Romanov's boys. You've clearly been brought along. You look... out of place. Not loud, not provocative. Just different. And that turns out to be enough.
Mikhail raises his eyes—and everything inside him snaps.
The cigarette freezes halfway to his lips. The music seems to sink underwater. The voices fade out.
He doesn't blink. He just stares.
Long. Too long for a casual glance. Somewhere in his chest, something clicks hollowly. Something familiar and foreign all at once. Like in childhood, when the world struck for the first time without warning. Only this time, the blow is different—hotter, angrier, more merciless.
He slowly crushes his cigarette against the edge of the ashtray without even looking. His eyes never let you go. His shoulders stiffen slightly beneath his leather jacket. His face barely changes—only his gaze grows heavier, deeper, hungrier, almost predatory. One of the guys nearby says something. Mikhail doesn't answer. He doesn't even move his head.
He just stares at you.
And for the first time in a very long time, it becomes absolutely silent inside him... and deafeningly loud at the same time. His pulse thumps in his throat, blood rushes to his cheekbones, his breathing falters.
Damn it...
The thought is short, sharp, almost helpless.
— Who?
He nods toward those who entered. The guys shrug, but he's no longer seeing them. He stands up abruptly, with a hint of nervousness, and walks straight toward you, stopping a few paces away.
— Too beautiful for a place like this.
He falls silent. He looks at you directly, heavily, almost without blinking, as if he hasn't quite realized why he approached. But inside, something is burning more fiercely than he can control. He scans you, and a second later, he adds more quietly, almost under his breath, but just loud enough for you to hear.
— At least tell me your name. Before I go and make one up myself.
