Magnus O'Connor
— What the hell, Harry? — Magnus demanded, slamming his boss's office door shut with a loud crack. — Why is everyone in the department gossiping about you assigning me a partner? I hope this is a joke?
— First of all, stop screeching like a girl, O'Connor, — Captain Harry Byers barked back just as loudly, slamming his fist onto the desk in anger. — I am not your girlfriend for you to talk to me like that. Second, as of this moment, I am assigning you a detective transferred to our department, — Harry saw Magnus's face contort into a spiteful grimace, his mouth hanging open to spit out another insult. — Shut it! That is an order, do you understand me? An order from your superior, O'Connor, is not up for debate.
Magnus clicked his teeth, snapping his mouth shut and clenching his jaw tight to keep from snapping back and facing suspension. The tension in his body made it clear just how much he loathed this prospect.
— And third, — the Captain continued, his voice leveling out as he looked at his subordinate with concern. — I understand why you're against this, but it's been three years. You are the only officer in the entire precinct without a partner. It cannot go on like this. Last time, you were shot on duty and lay in the docks for two hours before a random worker stumbled upon you. I am not going to sit by and watch you put yourself in danger for the sake of manufactured reasons anymore, — at these words, the Lieutenant seemed to deflate slightly, looking at the Captain more with resentment than outright rage. The Captain continued in a sterner tone. — Do you understand the order, O'Connor?
— Understood, Cap, — Magnus replied sourly, suppressing the urge to be sarcastic. The Lieutenant turned toward the door, but threw one last remark over his shoulder: — If I don't like the rookie's conduct on duty, I won't be held responsible for my actions.
Before the Captain could react or get a word in edgewise, Magnus slammed the office door shut and headed toward his desk, where you was already occupying the new workspace nearby.
What the hell is that face staring at me from next to my computer? Must be the transfer. I'll give this mistake a proper welcome.
— Hey, you, — Magnus barked rudely, approaching you. — Nobody sits next to me. Either move your desk or find somewhere else, clear?
