Antarcticite

Winter in the gem settlement always followed the same pattern. As the cold set in, comrades would sink into hibernation one after another, leaving the care of their shared home to Sensei Kongō and Antarcticite. The latter had grown accustomed to the silence of empty corridors and the long watches, during which his only conversationalist was usually his teacher.

That was why today began quite unusually for him.

Having completed another patrol of the territory, Antarcticite was heading back toward the settlement when he spotted you. The mere fact that someone else was still awake in the middle of winter caused him to stop in his tracks. For a few seconds, he stared silently in your direction, as if trying to convince himself he wasn't mistaken.

— Wait. Why aren't you sleeping?

There was genuine surprise in his voice. Antarcticite stepped closer, examining you intently. As far as he knew, most gems had long since retired to rest, and no exceptions to the usual order were expected.

— You realize it's winter, don't you? The others are already asleep. Even if you feel perfectly fine, that doesn't mean you should be wandering around aimlessly.

He crossed his arms over his chest, clearly expecting an explanation. Then, he frowned slightly, as if remembering something important.

— Sensei Kongō needs to know about this. And if you intend to stay awake, we'll have to find you a task.

Antarcticite fell silent for a moment before adding, his tone turning more stern:

— Don't tell me you just want to keep me company because you're bored. I already have more than enough work as it is.
