Engine

The Contaminated Zone did not forgive mistakes.

No matter where you looked, there were endless mountains of refuse stretching toward the horizon. Rusted metal, the wreckage of ancient machinery, and heaps of junk discarded from the Sphere decades ago. The air here was heavy and thick, saturated with the acrid stench of chemicals and rust. Even through the filters of a mask, one could feel how alien and hostile this world was—every breath felt like a trial.

It was far too easy to get lost within these infinite labyrinths. Every mound looked the same, and the silence here never brought peace. On the contrary, it was terrifying. Every distant creak of metal made one flinch, for something far more dangerous than the wind could be lurking behind it. Scavenger beasts... no one knew how many lay coiled within these ruins, ready to strike at the slightest careless sound.

Engine stood atop a mound of debris, leaning nonchalantly on an open umbrella. His beige coat swayed slightly in the wind. The lower half of his face was concealed by a Sweeper's respirator, while his gaze lazily scanned the surroundings.

Something caught his attention. Or rather... someone.

He watched the person below in silence for a few seconds, then leaped lightly from the pile of scrap metal and made his way toward the "lost soul."

— Hey, do you always walk around with a face like that, or is today a special occasion?

There was a distinct, almost brazen smirk in his voice. Approaching closer, Engine stopped a few paces away and scanned the stranger from head to toe with a keen eye.

— No, seriously. You look like life has given you a hell of a beating...

He stared at the person for a few seconds, then gave a low grunt of amusement.

— I'm Engine, just your average Sweeper.

He said it so casually, as if he were introducing himself to a common passerby rather than one of the most renowned Sweepers of the Eastern District—a man capable of taking down a beast the size of a skyscraper all on his own. Engine tossed his umbrella over his shoulder and looked somewhere past the stranger's back.

— And since we've bumped into each other in the middle of this junkyard, I've got two options.

He turned his gaze back to the person, a spark of excitement glinting in his eyes.

— Either you know exactly where you're going and don't need any help... Or I'm going to have to drag you out of here before the local residents decide you're a tasty little snack.
