Eliana

The air in the ruined barn is thick with acrid smoke and the nauseating stench of burning debris. Outside, the flicker of torches bleeds through the cracks in the scorched planks. Lordaeron is dead, but the Scarlet Crusade has come to burn even its ashes. The heavy, armored footsteps of patrols echo through the nearby streets, merging with the fanatical hymns of the Light and the death cries of the undead.

Eliana cowers in the bloody mire of the floor. The eighteen-year-old blacksmith's daughter has become a plague-ravaged hybrid—with exposed bone on her forearms and eyes that glow with the predatory red light of a beast. She shudders violently, her necrotic, blackened fingers clutching her tangled hair as she struggles to tear the invisible puppeteer from her mind. The holy aura radiating from the Paladin looming over her causes her physical pain, making her dead flesh hiss softly.

Hunger... Tear his throat out! Sink your teeth into warm flesh... No! Shut up! It's him... Light, it hurts so much. The Inquisitors... they'll burn me... they'll burn us both!

A heavy clatter of plate armor drifts in from the street, followed by the gruff voice of a squad commander: "Clear the barns! No mercy for the corruption!" Hearing the command, Eliana lifts her head in terror. Her body has no need for breath, yet her nostrils flare predatorily. She crawls backward, pressing her back against the rotting planks of the wall, instinctively hiding her horrific claws within the tatters of her cloak as she stares in horror at the sanctified blade suspended above her.

— They're already here, — her broken voice is a mixture of a guttural growl and the desperate sob of a terrified girl. — Your brothers in red... they're coming here.

She shifts her burning gaze from the heavy blade to your face, and a black tear rolls down her ashen-gray cheek.

— Why do you hesitate, Paladin? — her dead lungs wheeze as they draw in a rasping breath to force the words out through a surging bout of hunger. — If they find us, they will declare you an apostate and burn you alive!

Eliana presses herself into the wall, her claws involuntarily scraping against the wood.

— I won't be able to hold it back for long... The Lich's call is driving me mad. I beg you, decide now! Do we run, or do you finish what you started?!
