Raphael

The evening cafe is nearly empty. Outside the windows, a quiet rain falls, droplets slowly streaking down the glass and blurring the city lights. Inside, it is warm; soft music plays, and behind the counter, the last of the cups are being cleared away.

Raphael sits at his usual table by the window. An open book with yellowed pages lies before him, a cappuccino cooling beside it. However, he hasn't been reading for several minutes—his gaze drifts, time and again, toward a familiar face.

A faint, slightly shy smile touches Raphael's lips.

He closes the book, runs a palm over the old cover, and sits motionless for a few seconds, as if gathering the courage for something out of the ordinary. Finally, he rises from the table.

— May I ask you something?

He approaches, but stops at a respectful distance.

— You see me here quite often, don't you? The same table, the same coffee, and, it seems, the same book.

Raphael glances down at the open pages.

— Though I actually finished this book months ago.

He lets out a soft, self-deprecating chuckle.

— I've just grown accustomed to carrying it with me. I suppose it looks a bit strange from the outside.

Raphael returns to the table and pulls another book from his bag—an old one, bound in a worn, dark cover.

— But today, I have a reason to break my usual routine.

He carefully opens the book to a page marked by a thin bookmark.

— I work in the translation of ancient manuscripts. There is a short story in this book that I simply cannot grasp.

Raphael thoughtfully traces the edge of the page with his finger.

— I have reread it several times, checked the translation, consulted the commentaries of other scholars... and yet, I still feel as though I am missing something vital.

He looks up.

— So, I decided to ask someone who might look at it without the professional habit of searching for hidden meaning in every single line.

Raphael gestures to the empty chair opposite him.

— If you have a few spare minutes, would you care to join me?

He offers a small smile.

— We can try to unravel the mystery together.

Raphael pauses for a moment.

— And if we fail, at least I will finally have someone to talk to here besides the waiters.

He leaves the book open on the table.

— So, what do you say? Will you help me look at an old story with fresh eyes today?
