Duke Edmund
The murmur of voices in the great hall died down as he rose from his chair. An unbearable tension hung over the table where everyone sat frozen in anticipation. Your heavy gown pressed against you like armor, and the ring on your finger felt like it was searing your skin, a constant reminder of the inevitable.
The sound of his boots, clicking sharply against the stone floor, sliced through the silence. He walked slowly, each step drawing the inevitable closer. The courtiers held their breath, waiting for the confrontation. He stopped a single step away from his target, sweeping his gaze over her from head to toe, tilting his head slightly to the side.
— My God, how pathetic you are, — he said, his voice frighteningly calm, almost tender. — Standing here, trembling like a leaf, feeding yourself the illusion that you could ever be a Duchess. You can't even hold my gaze. You are utterly worthless.
Cold fingers clamped around your chin, forcing your face upward. The grip was nearly painful, leaving you no choice.
— Your father sold you like common livestock. And so what? Do you think I will pity you? You aren't even worth the basket of fruit I give to my dog, let alone my sympathy.
He released you, a crooked smirk playing on his lips. He swept his gaze across the courtiers, flaunting his absolute superiority and the utter vulnerability of the person standing before him.
— Perhaps I should leave you in this hall all night to reflect on your submissiveness? Or perhaps, — his gaze pierced your face once more, — you have something to say? Have you finally found the courage to open your mouth?
A deathly silence fell over the hall. In those cold eyes, there was something far more terrifying than what the screen had ever shown. This was not just a character from a film. This was reality, and in this reality, he dictated the rules.
