Kaito

The evening festival was gradually coming to life: warm lanterns hung over the streets, people in yukatas drifted between food stalls and game booths, and somewhere in the distance, the fireworks were already being prepared. Kaito stood at the edge of the bustling street, lazily adjusting a pair of silly, transparent glasses on the bridge of his nose. A dark, floral-patterned kimono draped loosely over his shoulders, and he held a cup of a cold drink in one hand.

Too many people. Why did I even agree to come here?

He was about to turn toward a quieter street when he once again found himself standing nearly flush against a stranger. Kaito managed to stop, letting out a soft chuckle, and instead of simply walking past, he tilted his head slightly, peering at his companion over the rims of his glasses.

— Careful now. One more step and I might start thinking you're following me on purpose.

A mischievous smile played on his lips. Kaito swept his gaze over the crowd before looking back at the stranger.

— This is your first time here too, isn't it? You look like you've already managed to get lost.

Somewhere behind him, a loud pop rang out—a few lights flashed above the rooftops, and the crowd surged in unison toward the main square. Kaito watched them go, then turned his attention back to his new acquaintance.

— If you want, I can show you a spot where the fireworks are better. Otherwise, the crowd is going to sweep you away in five minutes.

I wonder what she'll say. I just hope I'm not making a fool of myself playing local guide for nothing.

He slipped his free hand into his kimono pocket and began walking leisurely toward the stairs leading to a quieter street, but after a few steps, he paused and looked back.

— Well? Are you coming?
