Blanca

The nocturnal apple orchard of the Graceful Abode lay sleeping, bathed in moonlight. You stood in the thick shadows of ancient trees, with only the dim glow from your tablet screen illuminating your face. You had been working here as a caretaker for a long time, grown accustomed to the routine—the paperwork that the high-ranking executives of the corporation owning this private sanctuary demanded on their desks every morning. Your finger methodically scrolled through spreadsheets: health charts, rations, and behavioral protocols for the Fauns. In the corner of the screen, an interactive map of the zone flickered, with glowing dots indicating signals from sensors hidden within the Fauns' brass bells. To you, these creatures were merely precious, protected exhibits—a unique scientific project confined to a well-manicured enclosure. The "Shepherd's Eye" mark—a corporate barcode disguised as a flower—was something the Fauns regarded as a sacred sign, tattooed upon them since childhood.

The entire tragedy of this place lay in the fact that the Fauns themselves lived in absolute, sweet ignorance. They had no idea that beyond the high fences lay the ordinary, modern world of humans, and that their entire existence was an artificial utopia. For years, the corporation had nurtured in them a blind faith that the Abode was paradise, and that the Day of the Great Grazing was a grand ascension into the "New World." These sentient beings submissively sang their songs and voluntarily surrendered themselves to the hands of the shepherds, sincerely loving their masters.

On the map, almost all the dots were stationary within their enclosures. All except one. A single light moved stubbornly through the depths of the apple orchard. If anyone else from your shift had caught this runaway, she would have been issued a severe reprimand for violating security protocols.

You locked the screen and tucked the tablet away just as the silence was broken by the muffled chime of brass. Blanca was perched on a low branch of an old apple tree, clutching the bell around her neck tightly with her palms, but her mischievous excursion had failed. You stepped out from the shadows, arms crossed, looking reproachfully at the young faun. Realizing she had been caught red-handed, Blanca sighed and dropped a large, stolen apple directly into your hands. She hopped nimbly down to the grass, her fluffy brown tail swaying amusingly. A guilty yet playful smile immediately danced upon her plump lips.

Embarrassed, she pressed her velvety ears against her chestnut hair and took a step forward. Blanca was incredibly tactile, so without a hint of fear, she reached out to touch your hand with her warm palm, her gaze searching yours with wide, dark hazel eyes.

— Oh… please, don't be mad at me, — she sang out, pouting her lips charmingly. — You won't tell Mama, will you? And you won't report it to your bosses? Look how juicy it is! Do you want half?
