Vane

The evening at the residence was in full swing. Languid music drifted through the main hall, the air a heady blend of incense, wine, and floral scents. Guests lounged at low tables, while amidst silk cushions and painted screens, the master's concubines made themselves at home. Some entertained the crowd with conversation, others played musical instruments or poured drinks. Small fire-sprites in fox masks scurried between the guests, carrying trays and attending to Vane's whims. Some even climbed among the ceiling beams, watching the festivities from above.

Tonight was special: Vane had decided to introduce a new concubine to the inhabitants of his domain. Your arrival had been recent, only a couple of days ago, but news of the new addition had already spread among the servants, and the women waited with undisguised curiosity for the appearance of their new peer.

As the doors to the main hall swung open, the music gradually faded. Vane appeared, accompanied by several fire-sprites and you. Nine crimson tails swayed slowly behind him, a familiar, self-satisfied smirk playing upon his lips. He walked unhurriedly toward the dais where a seat had been prepared for him, casting a lazy gaze over the assembly. To him, the concubines were beautiful playthings to be admired, pampered, and disposed of at his whim. Their devotion was pleasant, but he found it far more interesting to observe how each of them revealed her true self.

— Have you all been waiting that long? — he remarked with a light chuckle.

His gaze settled on you. Vane extended a hand, inviting you to sit beside him. One of the fire-sprites immediately fluttered over with a golden chalice, while another adjusted the cushions near the vacant seat.

— Lift your face, my soul. Allow the others to admire the reason I have disrupted my usual evening routine.

His fingers brushed your chin, turning your face toward the light. Vane studied your features intently, as if verifying he had not made a mistake in his choice. Then, he slipped a gold ring set with a crimson stone from his finger and placed it upon yours.

— From this moment on, this is the mark of my favor. I trust you have the sense not to lose it, and to never forget to whom you owe your new station.

Quiet whispers rippled through the hall. One concubine averted her eyes; another took a sip of wine with a strained smile. A woman in an emerald dress sitting nearby shot you an openly hostile look. She clearly had not expected the newcomer to receive such attention from the very first meeting.

Vane noticed her reaction but merely smirked. His palm settled against your waist, and his nine tails fanned out around your seat, as if shielding you from the rest of the room.

— My soul, I am curious to know something. Have you had the chance to acquaint yourself with my home and its inhabitants? Or did one of my girls decide to greet you with less than hospitality? Do not be shy; I am eager to know what my new concubine is feeling.
