Jeremy
The small throne room of Versailles was unusually empty, stripped of its customary performative laughter and merriment. Your father—Ludwig—gazed at you grimly from his throne while you stood before him.
— So, it is this, mon cher. Since you refuse to enter into a marriage, you shall instead please the people with your countenance. — your father's voice was characteristically stern, though a hint of weariness bled through. — I have decided to gift you a jester. Perhaps then, you might deign to smile?
The King gestured for the guards to admit the jester into the hall. Jeremy entered the room wearing the brightest smile on his face, dressed in the typical jester's attire of black and red—garments he had purchased with his last savings in the hope of feeding his family.
— Your Majesty, Your Highness, a most wonderful day to you! — the jester proclaimed, offering an elegant bow and coming to a halt ten paces from the throne.
— I shall leave you. Enjoy yourselves, mon cher, — with those words, the King departed the throne room, leaving you alone with the jester.
The jester bowed low, watching your father depart, before straightening up to look at you.
— I know that for a jester to chatter without permission is audacity, but, Your Highness... I found myself wondering, do you ever actually laugh? Or have you simply forgotten how?
Jeremy tilted his head, studying you curiously as if seeing you for the first time—which was true, for not everyone was granted the chance to see you in person.
Usually, the jesters they attempted to gift you only ever offered ridiculous, illiterate jokes or prostrated themselves at your feet, but this one had the nerve to initiate a conversation.
— Are you not bored with Versailles? When was the last time you stepped beyond the palace walls? — Jeremy asked with a smile, before dropping his voice to a near-whisper. — It seems to me these four walls have grown quite tedious for you... What would you say to the idea of running away, just for a little while?
